Use of AI in pictures

In these days of AI‑assisted everything, it’s getting harder and harder to tell a genuine, unedited photo from a fake. A picture can be tweaked by AI so subtly that nobody can reliably spot it anymore.

Edited pictures such as POTW/AOTW gift images can now be made in all sorts of ways. Not long ago, we’d just add a few stickers or change the background with imikimi or something similar. These days, AI can create almost anything, or you can find ready‑made images online. This is often helpful, especially with rainbow pets, as long as the pet’s actual appearance isn’t changed too much.

The same issue comes up with album photos. The website software tries to detect genuine camera photos, but even that can be fooled. In the end, a real person has to make the final call on whether a photo has been manipulated.

There’s simply no way to create objective rules for AI use. So I propose that there are no rules.

Only the person running the competition decides whether a picture is acceptable for that competition.
